Colvin Matheson discusses Succeeding at Ownership & Leadership Transition During Uncertain Times at the ACEC Structures Congress in Chicago on March 30, 2012
Friday, March 30, 2012
Even in the best of times structural engineering firms often struggle through the organizational, leadership succession, and financial implications/processes of ownership transitions. Four years into the current economic downturn, especially for the E&C market, makes ownership transition an even more difficult process as firms navigate the continued choppy waters and uncertain future. Moderated by AEC industry consultant Colvin Matheson, CFA of Matheson Financial Advisors, CASE is pleased to sponsor this panel discussion on ownership transition and the business practices that have led the panel firms to successful ownership and leadership transitions. The panel will include next generation transition leaders from small, medium, and large firms represented, respectively, by: Kevin McCormick, Managing Principal of Miller Consulting Engineers (Portland, OR), Stacy Bartoletti, President & CEO of Degenkolb Engineers (San Francisco, CA), and Robert DeScenza, President of Thornton Tomasetti (New York, NY). Among other topics, our panel (and audience) will explore the success factors at work for these firms as well as the impact of the Great Recession on their transition plans and how firms can continue to evolve their transition plans.

David Cohen presents Impact of the Economic Downturn on Shareholder Value AEBL Forum
Tuesday, June 23, 2009
The world as we know it changed dramatically on September 14-15, 2008 when Lehman Brothers collapsed, and the credit crisis led to the collapse of world stock markets and a deepening of the recession. Growing and profitable firms became shrinking less profitable firms. Yet long range plans call for growth and the need to plan for exit strategies. This session will try to restore some faith and give firm owners the tools they need to continue to build value in their firms and attain it, as well as to negotiate deals under new expectations of risk and returns.

The presentation will provide insight into firm valuations and deal structuring to enable attendees better chances of successfully closing their deals—whether they are buyers or sellers. There will be discussion of the underlying business factors that impact value that can be managed and evaluated when pursuing M&A deals and implementing internal transition plans.

The presenters will help the attendees understand the ratios and the impact they have on building shareholder value. We will review the various performance, liquidity and leverage ratios and how to benchmark these results against industry information. In addition, we will spend time discerning what causes movement in these ratios and how these causes can affect value.
